Dr. Mohammad Ali Bhatti is an accomplished contemporary expressionist whose work focuses on themes inspired by mysticism, the human experience, and pressing social issues. Born and raised in Pakistan, he began his artistic journey at local institutions before pursuing further studies in the United States, where he earned an MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in 1998.
Initially drawn to figurative art, Dr. Bhatti became a skilled portrait artist. However, his evolving fascination with contemporary abstract expressionism shifted his focus toward the mystical and socio-political landscapes of his environment. Over the past 30 years, he has painted and exhibited globally, presenting 35 solo exhibitions and establishing a distinctive presence in numerous worldwide collections.
His artworks are characterized by layers of acrylic, oil, resin, spray paint, and torn magazine pages, interwoven with design patterns and calligraphic elements that enrich his imagery. Using intense, vibrant colors applied in bold strokes, he infuses his canvases with an exciting character, reflecting a synthesis of aesthetic sensibility and metaphysical versatility. Dr. Bhatti's unique style, marked by its subject matter, bold contrasts, and vibrant colors, has garnered appreciation among collectors both in the United States and internationally.
Currently residing in Houston, Texas, Dr. Bhatti is associated with the Watercolor Art Society of Houston, AO5 Gallery in Austin, and the artist-owned Archway Gallery in Houston. He teaches a variety of art classes, employing a blend of demonstration and hands-on instruction, cultivating a dedicated following of students.
Artist Statement:
My abstract art is a manifestation of my inmost emotions. I embrace
spontaneity, allowing my emotions to guide the flow of the artwork. Nature is a chaotic symphony of patterns and energies. My abstract compositions draw inspiration from the organic chaos inherent in the natural world. By embracing spontaneity and allowing the colors to dance freely on the canvas, I attempt to capture the dynamic forces that shape our environment, revealing the beauty that emerges from disorder. Ultimately, my goal is to create a visual symphony of emotions that resonates universally. Through the interplay of color, form, and texture, I seek to convey the depth and complexity of human feelings. The process of creating emotional abstraction is an intimate dance between intuition and intention. Through repetitive and rhythmic mark-making, I invite viewers to lose themselves in the quiet contemplation of form and space. Through a vibrant interplay of colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and layered textures, I strive to capture the essence of joy, sorrow, longing, and introspection. The canvas becomes a mirror reflecting the depths of my soul, and, in turn, inviting viewers to embark on their own emotional journey. The viewer is encouraged to explore the artwork with an open heart, interpreting the emotions evoked rather than searching for concrete symbols. Each stroke on the canvas is a brush with my soul, inviting viewers to explore the emotional landscape that transcends the boundaries of words.
